It’s wild just how much they’re trying to shove AI down our throats.

You can often buy the “digital signage” of TVs. Same pannel, but it’s just a screen. I think it’s targetting businesses but you can buy them too!

I just set up a rule on my firewall to disallow outgoing web traffic from my TV so I can still control it over the wifi. Then if I want to sell it I haven’t broken any functionality.

I’ve had good luck with their mid-high end kitchen appliances and washer/dryer.

Not impressed with the TV and the AI update made the UI very slow and unresponsive. Next one will not be LG.

Unfortunately, it was just that: good luck. All appliances from Samsung and LG are notorious in the market space for premature failure. If we had a functioning consumer protection agency, they wouldn’t be able to even sell something of such poor reliability.

The panels all come from two producers (really just one for the very good ones). So, pick whoever you can get the best deal on for your needed featureset and never connect it to the internet.

and never connect it to the internet.

How many of them force you to connect to the internet as part of of the initial setup wizard “in order to register and enable your new tv”?

AFAIK, some of the TVs with built in Roku have been forcing exactly that before they will allow you to do anything.

I got my mom an iPad, apparently AI is unavoidable in setup. To finish setup, you must agree to Apple AI.

They are all doing it together. I can’t keep track of who owns what, perhaps “they” are all actually owned by the same megacorp.

Please don’t lie, this is exactly what happened using the automatic setup (repeatedly). Let’s make a deal, if I bother to film it and post the video, you agree to immediately delete your account; if I am wrong, I agree to immediately delete my account. We will need mod enforcement, as I don’t trust you for obvious reasons.

Ironically, your statement is itself dishonest or inept, so thanks for the snort.

You want me to buy and set up a new iPad to show you how to navigate instructions on a screen?

            Thanks for the laugh.

Whatever would give you that idea? I don’t want you to buy and set up a new iPad to show me how to navigate instructions on a screen, that was never said or even vaguely implied. It’s not even a viable conversational option, well done.

Thanks for the hearty laughs at you laughing inappropriately due to your own lack of comprehension and nonsensical response. Seriously, how could you possibly think that I want you to do setup or buy an ipad in any way? The bet was… oh why bother, fine, you don’t want a video that proves you are wrong.

Your claim is still dishonest and/or inept, recall that your setup experience is irrelevant and not universal, per Apple’s very own admission. Plain to discover for anyone who investigates with even a cursory search, oh well, haha hahaha thank yoooooooooouuuu

    Incredible. What a shit idea.

Anyways, kids, remember: never let your smart devices talk to the internet. We actually love our LG OLED - it’s fantastic hardware. But it has not once, and never will, get the chance to phone home.

But what do you use instead? The onboard apps work well and having two remotes always sucked.

I have two AppleTVs and while they are great at what they do, I won’t buy another. The reason is that they are still locked down to what Apple allows you to do. Want to watch YouTube? Your only realistic option is Google’s app, complete with ads. If you connect a real computer to the TV, you have significantly more control over what’s going on, but you may lose some of the convenience of a dedicated TV device. Hopefully with things like the GabeCube, more Linux OSes will be dedicated to big screen TV use.
